TGIM

April 11, 2021

I was scrolling through Instagram and saw a fellow yoga teacher had posted as the caption to her video, "Thursday is my favorite day of the week." I thought, and responded, "I love Thursdays, too!" And then I thought, why do I love Thursdays?

I'm pretty sure I started loving Thursday for no reason other than its reminder that Friday was near.

Isn't it strange how we've grown to celebrate certain days of the week and to dread others?

Thank God It's Friday, or its abbreviation TGIF, is a phrase that's been used to celebrate the end of the work week and the start of the weekend. A quick Google search revealed to me that variations of this phrase are used in many different languages and countries throughout the world.

Friday has been glorified so much that if someone has Thursday and Friday off of work, instead of saying, "Thank God It's Wednesday," they say, "Today is my Friday!"

I had a teacher in high school who found that students typically hit a wall in the middle of the week and coined the term "Half Ass Wednesdays." But no day has it harder than Monday. Even the dreaded "Sunday Scaries" are rooted in a fear of Mondays.

A few years ago, my mom read something about how instead of, or in addition to, saying "Thank God It's Friday," we should say "Thank God It's Monday!" Since then, I think we've said it pretty much every Monday as a way to kick a new week off on a positive note.

I've grown to love Mondays and every other day of the week. This is, in part, because I do something that I love and enjoy and I know that's not the case for everyone.

But while we may not be able to change our circumstances, we can all change our mindset.

Restaurants already have this figured out and market days of the week to drive sales with daily specials (i.e., Taco Tuesday, Wine Wednesday). We also might look forward to certain days our favorite show comes on TV, or when a podcast we listen to releases a new episode.

You can create this for yourself - something to look forward to every day of the week.

Decide what is possible in your schedule and build up to it.

It could be reading a book in the bath at the end of the day, having a glass of wine or a fancy mocktail while you cook dinner (Ayesha Curry says you should do this every time you cook - make it a celebration!), or simply listening to your favorite song first thing in the morning while you brush your teeth.

No matter what you decide to incorporate into your day, shift your mindset by reframing your thoughts. Catch how you feel about the day ahead when you wake up on Monday and shift it with a "Thank God It's Monday!"
